Which perspective comes first?

The camera, the audience - or another? For myself as a filmmaker, specialising in representing trauma-related issues, the crucial perspective is that of the contributor. Working with experts by experience and those who work to support people impacted by trauma, be it in local, regional, national or international contexts, my role is to be alongside - enabling real and honest voices from the heart of serious issues to be heard.

Whether I'm working alongside individuals who have lived experiences of trauma, with a charity or public sector organisation whose work is being profiled, a specialist whose expertise is being shared, what matters is to listen well and create sensitively, not sensationally. In my experience of the last twenty years, working with care and integrity as well as creativity and imagination, I find that when individuals are enabled to share their lived experience, communicating the personal impact upon them, and offering their target audience insight, advice, guidance and support, what emerges are responses that are truly engaged, effective and essential.
